Herschel start unveiling the distant universe of infrared galaxies

img The instruments, HIFI, PACS and SPIRE on board the Herschel space observatory, a European space agency mission, launched by Ariane 5 on May 14, 2009, have now all produced their first lights. The SPIRE instrument has made its first astronomical observations, with spectacular results on Messier 74, a galaxy at 35 millions light-years. The SPIRE camera responds to light at wavelengths between 250 and 500 microns (500-1000 times longer than the wavelength of visible light). Very significantly, the frames are also filled with many other galaxies which are much more distant and only show up as point sources.
